As many of you know, the quality of a breed is the breeding stock. As a horsewoman I have witnessed the long term effects of breeding “just for color” and ignoring the responsibilities of breeding for longevity, productivity, intelligence and quality of the animals. Our herd of black Dexter cows had been judged at State Fairs, Annual General Meeting shows and we had them classified when that program was the “flavor of the year” with the Dexter registry. We knew we had good breeding stock, so now we just needed to get our herd up to a size appropriate for our acreage then we would be ready to start sharing our unique new breed.

Almost all cattle associations allow the five generation upgrades to their breeds. This is a common practice to breed new qualities into or bad traits out of a breed.
